I hereby decree

I hereby decree that despite its improvement, Windows Vista Security might actually be its biggest security flaw. Why would I say a thing like that? Well, it comes down to a mismanaged computer network.

At work, I use Vista and - I really mean this - it has never given me a problem. Not once. It took a little getting used to the new GUI, but now I actually prefer some, if not most, of the changes. One of the reasons, I am sure, that I haven't had a problem is the on-top-of-it IT department. Normally-on-top-of-it I should say. I haven't been able to install any updates for any software on my machine in months.

I do not have administrative privileges, and I shouldn't need them, normally, but whenever there is a software update, I have to cancel it. This is the problem. There could potentially be a hole or security problem with my current set up and I would have no way of patching the hole myself. I have to wait for the IT department to do it for me and I don't blame them for ignoring my machine, as it has a unique setup compared to the rest of the network. I have programs that constantly update themselves where the rest of the network they can batch update whenever necessary. Still, the longer I go without an update, the more prone I am to an attack or vulnerability of some kind. So far all their foresight, not allowing me to install important updates on my own might actually be worse for me than having a more open machine.

I realize that this isn't really the fault of Vista, but the fact that their security options seem to be all on or all off, its hard to create permissions like those that would be ideal for my situation. Anyway, besides that I repeat, I have never had a problem with Vista, ever. I hear all these tales of horror and agony. I seriously can't relate.
